small spiral bound book with child's eye showing through cut-out hole in page

This “Whose Eyes are These?” class book is a fun material to make for your preschool or preschool special education class.

It uses close-up student pictures to highlight specific facial features.  Students see a facial feature highlighted in a “peek-through” window, and they guess whose feature it is.

Concepts Covered: Facial feature vocabulary; working on classmates’ names; answering “whose” questions; using possessives (“It’s Johnny’s eyes”).

Theme:  All About Me (085) or Body (090)

Instructions: To make these books, follow these steps:

  1. Take pictures of your students.  Try to fill the frame with their whole face, or crop the photo to maximize the face.
  2. Print the pictures.
  3. Cut pieces of index paper the same size as the photos.
  4. Take one photo at a time, and decide what facial feature to highlight (if you’re highlighting more than just eyes).
  5. Place a piece of index paper over the photo.  Lift the edge of the index paper slightly, and make a mark above the feature you want to highlight.
  6. Use an Exacto knife to make a “window” in the piece of paper.  Check after it is cut to make sure it shows what you want it to.
  7. Write “Whose (eyes/nose/mouth, etc.) is this?” on the index paper.
Do this for the rest of the photos.
  8. Laminate the photos and the index papers.
  9. Place the papers in order and bind the book with metal rings or a plastic spiral.
